In the aftermath of Avengers vs X-Men a new superteam is born with heroes from both groups. Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender is the first title in the Marvel NOW! initiative. Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first look at the cover to issue #1. Captain America, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Rogue and Havok are featured on the cover by John Cassaday.
Remender knows how to tackle epics with big casts after writing covert teams for both franchises (Uncanny X-Force, Secret Avengers.) He gave EW info about his initial lineup of a team focused on human-mutant relations.
“Captain America comes out of Avengers vs. X-Men recognizing that he didn’t do enough to help the mutants. He’s going to fix that.”
Havok will be team leader. The brother of X-Men leader Cyclops is currently in X-Factor.
“He is put in a very difficult situation,” says Remender. “Havok’s always been the black sheep rock-and-roller of the Summers family. He can’t do that anymore. You’re going to see Havok become one of the biggest players in the Marvel Universe.”
Remender calls Rogue “the Wolverine of the team now. Her adoptive step-mother was Mystique, so she was raised to hate the Avengers.”
The final member is sure to stir turmoil within the team: Scarlet Witch.
“She’s the character responsible for eradicating the mutants in the first place,” says Remender, who describes Wanda’s role in the book as a “redemption arc.”
Thanks to EW.
I’m thrilled to see John Cassaday back at Marvel. Joss Whedon and Cassaday had an epic run on Astonishing X-Men.
Remender is excellent at team dynamics, boundary pushing story ideas and seeing characters in a new way. He made me actually start loving Fantomex and Deadpool. I love the way he writes Psylocke.
What do you think of the team lineup?
