That evil smirk! Does this Thanos Rising #2 variant cover by Ed McGuinness remind you of the chilling reveal at the end of The Avengers movie?

Thanos was revealed during the first ending of Marvel’s The Avengers that made some in the audience go “huh?” or “OH —-!!!”

“The Mad God of Titan” was the mastermind behind Loki’s alien invasion in the movie but in the comic books this super villain once wiped out half the Marvel universe.

Thanos will star in the cosmic rematch of the Summer in Infinity by Jonathan Hickman. Jason Aaron (Wolverine and the X-Men, Ghost Rider, Venom, Scalped) is revealing the twisted childhood of the powerhouse villain. Aaron talked with Marvel.com about why he’s wants exploring the origin of the death worshipping God of Titan in Thanos Rising.

“The chance to do as dark Continue reading

X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM

xmen battle of the atom art adams  Marvel’s X-Men C2E2 panel was packed with news including details of the X-Men 50th Anniversary event!

X-Men: Battle of the Atom will kick off in September with a special issue by Brian Michael Bendis and Frank Cho then run through the core titles (All-New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men and Brian Wood’s X-Men) then wrap in a final bookend by Jason Aaron and a “mystery artist.”

X-Men from the future including Kate Bishop, Deadpool, Lady Xorn, Ice Beast and more all designed by the legendary Arthur Adams arrive in the present. This Future Team’s mission is a direct response to the Beast bringing the original X-Men from the past in the present. These future X-Men will target the teens (now at the Jean Grey and Charles Xavier Schools) and the objective is to send them back by any means necessary.

“The story itself hinges on the All-New X-Men and whether or not they need to  be sent back to their home time,” X-Men Senior Editor Nick Lowe tells Marvel.com.  “This causes the X-Men of the past, present and future to pick sides.”

“Jason Aaron came to us with this [idea],” said Brian Michael Bendis, “Jason pitched big and he scored. Jason came to everyone with the  bare essentials of this idea and everybody got really excited about it because  it was all the things we liked about the X-Men. It spoke to the legacy of the  entire franchise while at the same time focusing on the future.”

How do you follow up a story about a serial killer of Immortals?

Drop a Godbomb!

Jason Aaron kicked off his Thor: God of Thunder series with the Avenger battling Gorr, the God Butcher in three time periods: Young Thor fighting and drinking with his Vikings, Thor in a present day alien world and King Thor, the last of the Asgardians in a final battle. This week in Thor: God of Thunder #7 the Godbomb arc detonates:

“As we’ll see, Gorr has his own world in the future, and he has legions of Continue reading

THANOS RISING Review

Thanos Rising #1 courtesy Marvel

Thanos Rising #1 courtesy Marvel

I feel a little uneasy right now after having just read Thanos Rising #1. Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi actually made me feel sympathy and empathy for the most cold-blooded, ruthless killer in the Marvel Universe.

The Demi-God who worships Death comes to the planet of his birth and flashes back to his birth. Is a villain born evil, does he grew up that way or is manipulated into his deadly legacy?

As I read this first issue I was reminded of the boys in Stephen King’s Stand By Me, Norman Bates in Psycho and  Continue reading

More Field Trips for Wolverine’s X-MEN?

Dog Logan is teaching brutal lessons of survival in Wolverine and the X-Men. The Headmaster of the Jean Grey School took some of his more “troubled” students to the Savage Land for some team building and bonding. Wolverine’s long-lost brother ambushed Logan and is turning the field trip into a game of life and death.

The Jean Grey School isn’t the only home of higher learning in the Marvel Universe. In this week’s X-Position on Comic Book Resources writer Jason Aaron answered a fan’s question about future field trips and I loved his answer:

“The way this field trip is going, I don’t imagine Wolverine is going to be up for another one anytime soon. But as for exploring other exotic locations, I’m really interested in Continue reading

How do you top a story about a serial killer of Gods? Drop a Godbomb! Jason Aaron kicked off his Thor: God of Thunder with the Odinson fighting a sadistic entity called The God Butcher in three time periods: Young Thor fighting with his Viking followers, Thor in a present day alien world and King Thor, the last of the Asgardians in a final battle.
Aaron will delve into the origin of Gorr, the God Butcher in Thor: God of Thunder #6 on March 13th with guest artist Butch Guice (he recently wrapped his run with Ed Brubaker on Winter Soldier.) Esad Ribic returns for issue 7, the first part chapter of the Godbomb arc.

THANOS RISING: A Bad Guy is Born!

He was the big purple bad revealed during the first ending of Marvel’s The Avengers that made some in the audience go “huh?” or “OH —-!”

Thanos was behind Loki’s alien army in the movie but in the comic books the super villain once wiped out half the universe.

The comeback of Thanos continues in a brand new limited series Thanos Rising this April by Jason Aaron (Wolverine and the X-Men) and Simone Bianchi. Aaron talks with Marvel.com about why he wants to delve into the origin of the death worshipping God of Titan.

“The chance to do as dark and creepy a story as I’ve ever done for Marvel. This is not a super hero story. There are no good guys swooping in to save the day here. This is the origin story of a very bad dude. A cosmic mass murderer.”

Aaron says the story begins on the day Thanos is born and “things start to get weird right from the get-go” and as for the women who influence the Titan Aaron says “Thanos has dangerous taste in women.”

The series will introduce new characters and classic characters like Mentor, the father of Thanos and show us how Titan “was a sci-fi paradise when Thanos was born. A place without weapons, without the idea of murder. But that all began to change…”

For the entire interview here’s the Marvel.com link.

Thanos killed half the universe in the classic story The Infinity Gauntlet. The gauntlet was seen briefly in the movie Thor. In the pages of the new New Avengers the member of the Illuminati are searching for a lost Infinity Gem. Could these upcoming comic book stories be setting the stage for what we might see in Avengers 2: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against Thanos?

Do NOT keep reading unless you read that issue!

Seriously!

OK

Here it is:

The finale of the Frankenstein Murder Circus arc ended with comeback of a villain I wasn’t expecting! Jason Aaron dropped a supernatural bombshell but has he been warning us of this old enemy’s  return since the first issue?

Frankenstein’s Monster and a witch named Calcabring made an unholy alliance to enchant the X-Men into becoming circus freaks and helping the monster track his prey – the young Bishop of the new Hellfire Club aka the last Frankenstien!

The X-Men ultimately defeated Frankenstein, the witch and their circus of zombie clowns! On the final page we learned the witch has been serving Azazel! The demon looking mutant daddy of Nightcrawler appeared to have magically transported into our world!

Who is Azazel?

In a storyline called The Draco (Uncanny X-Men #426 – #434) writer Chuck Austen revealed that Nightcrawler’s father was Azazel. This mutant from Biblical times was banished by Angels to a dark brimstone dimension. He was able to escape the dimension for brief periods of time and visited Earth to father several demon-looking mutant children. Azazel fathered Kurt Wagner with Mystique. The X-Men stopped Azazel’s plot to claim the Earth via his teleporting demon children and the villain went into character no man’s land.

Azazel (played by Jason Flemying) was part of Sebastian Shaw’s Hellfire Club in X-Men: First Class. Director Matthew Vaughn didn’t reference the Nightcrawler connection and turned the reviled character into a sinister on- screen smash.

It appears Azazel’s popularity from the last film has inspired a comic book comeback. One of the many running storylines since Wolverine and the X-Men launched is the bamfs running wild at The Jean Grey School. The tiny Nightcrawler looking creatures escaped to the school when Beast opened a portal to their dimension. The little gremlins have been making mischief as the school (like stealing Wolverine’s whisky) but have they been agents of Azazel all this time? Could this lead to the resurrection of the real Kurt Wagner aka Nightcrawler?

Here’s my review of Wolverine and the X-Men #23.
