Fantastic Four #2 Preview

Fantastic Four #2 courtesy Marvel

Matt Fraction and Mark Bagley launched Fantastic Four #1 with heart, humor and thrills. Reed is taking Marvel’s First Family on a new adventure through time and space but he’s hiding the real reason behind the sudden trip – and it’s a heartbreaker.

Before Reed, Sue, Johnny, Ben and the kids blast off they must recruit a new FF to take their place. Marvel shared preview art for Fantastic Four #2. We Medusa, She-Hulk, Ant-Man and She-Thing will take over for them in a brand new FF title by Fraction and Mike Allred. This next issue shows us how Reed recruited his “replacements.”

I’ve always been in love with Medusa. She may be my favorite redhead in comics (maybe after Jean Grey?) The Queen of the Inhumans will be a perfect mother figure for the kids of the Future Foundation.

I’m loving She-Hulk and Ben Grimm pumping iron! Jennifer served as Ben’s replacement back in the John Byrne era.

Ant-Man (Scott Lang) may be the one friend Reed can share his secret with? The two men share a bond of science and being fathers. Scott could find the key to cure Reed somewhere in the microverse?

Mike Allred’s Fantastic Replacements

FF #1 courtesy Marvel

Why am I excited for FF#1?

Matt Fraction Words. Mike Allred Art. Medusa. Ant-Man.

Fraction send Marvel’s First Family into space in Fantastic Four #1 with Mark Bagley. Fraction isn’t leaving the Earth defenseless. She-Hulk, She-Thing, Ant-Man and Medusa form the new FF in FF#1.

I love the Inhumans. Black Bolt and Medusa are one of Marvel’s most beautiful and tragic couples. Seeing how Medusa’s story in FF play out is just one of the tempting reasons to check out the book.

FF #1 courtesy Marvel

I love the story of Scott Lang too. This Ant-Man was destroyed by the Scarlet Witch in Avengers Disassembled then brought back to life to see his daughter killed in Avengers: The Children’s Crusade. Fraction previously teased how Lang will carry out a plan of revenge against Doctor Doom for Cassie’s demise.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m a She-Hulk fan and I’m curious about She-Thing but my heart belongs to Medusa.

Ant-Man Goes Big Time! Marvel Point One Preview

courtesy Marvel

The coming years are BIG for a little guy! Ant-Man will get the big screen treatment in a film by Edgar Wright. Erik O’Grady has gone from shady to dark in Rick Remender’s Secret Avengers. Scott Lang is joining FF by Matt Fraction and Mike Allred. Let’s give a big  hand for the little guy!

This Ant-Man (Scott Lang) is featured in a new tease for Marvel Now! Point One courtesy Marvel.com. This book will be a primer for the Marvel Now 2013 relaunch. Fraction has said Lang will take a pro-active role against Fantastic Four nemesis Doctor Doom as retribution for the death of Stature aka Cassie Lang.

Bring on the Ant-Men!

Fantastic Four Payback

FF #1 courtesy Marvel

Matt Fraction is sending the Fantastic Four into space and forming a new FF to hold down the fort here on Earth in the Marvel NOW relaunch. One member is planning some serious payback against Doctor Doom but it’s not who you think.

Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (along with Medusa, She-Hulk and She-Thing) are the new FF lineup. Fraction tells Comics Newsarama he’ll follow through on a tragic moment from Avengers: The Children Crusade.

 SPOILER WARNING:

IF YOU HAVEN’T READ AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN’S CRUSADE (READ IT- I LOVE THIS STORY!) THEN YOU MAY WANT TO STOP NOW.

 SERIOUSLY.

 HERE IT COMES.

 OK.

FF #1 courtesy Marvel

”Doom killed Scott’s daughter. There’s no other way to put it, there’s no other way to phrase it, there’s no skirting around the issue. Because of his actions, Doctor Doom killed Cassie Lang. What this book is going to be about is Scott and his replacement Four, and the Future Foundation, aiming their resources right at Doctor Doom. The premise he presents to the Future Foundation is “End Doom.” And not just kill him, but eliminate him from human memory. That would be worse for Doom than dying. And that’s the payback that Scott ultimately wants.

This is their macro arc, this is their reason to being, this is their constant through line: “Let’s remove Doom from the equation of life on Earth, and see what happens.” But concurrent to that, every FF villain that ever was comes out of the woodwork, gunning for these imposters, thinking now’s their time to take their shot. So you’ve got these people who have not been the Fantastic Four longer than 10 minutes having to fight off all of the latest and greatest versions of the characters you know and love the most. Whereas Fantastic Four is constant new stuff and new places we’ve not been before, FF is the greatest hits performed by a brand-new band.”

For Fraction’s entire interview here’s the Comics Newsarama link.

Cassie Lang aka Stature courtesy Marvel

I LOVE the Young Avengers. Scott was killed by the Scarlet Witch (kinda) in Avengers Disassembled. The amazing and inspiring Cassie carried on her father’s legacy as Stature in Young Avengers. The time twisting events of Avengers: Children’s Crusade led to a brief, heartwarming and heartbreaking reunion between father and daughter. I’m thrilled that Fraction will continue Scott’s story. Hurt Doom, hurt him bad!

This is Cassie by Young Avengers artist Jim Cheung. Hope Marvel will have Cheung create a variant for this story.

Mike Allred on the new FF

FF #1 courtesy Marvel

Matt Fraction revealed he’s taking the Fantastic Four on a family vacation into space with artist Mark Bagley. While Marvel’s First Family is away the Earth will be protected by the FF with artist Mike Allred. Fraction’s backup team includes Ant-Man and Medusa of the Inhumans. The Madman creator tells Marvel.com why he joined the FF.

“When I was approached with a project starring one of my all-time favorite, and vastly under-rated, characters, Ant-Man, I leapt out of my shoes. Literally. Those shoes are ruined now. Ant-Man has been there from the beginning. One of the very first Marvel heroes, folks; I think the first or second behind the Fantastic Four. Most people don’t know that.

Then add claiming the Baxter Building with my fave Marvel lady, Medusa, big and sexy She-Hulk, and one of the cleverest creations in recent memory, Miss Thing—now I’m almost out of my skin. Fortunately that’s just a figure of speech. I’m still tucked nicely away into my skin.

Seriously, I’m going nuts with excitement. I’m living the dream I dreamt when I was a kid, laying on the living room floor making comics with my big brother Lee.”

I have to agree with Allred’s excitement for Medusa – I love her too. Here’s the link to Matt Fraction revealing his take on the Fantastic relaunch.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man for Marvel Films

Courtesy Marvel.com

Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man movies are definitely on the way! Marvel made it official at SDCC. Guardians will warp into theaters August 1, 2014. From the concept art revealed it appears the Guardians will be the more recent version of the team featuring characters like Rocket Raccoon and Drax.

courtesy Marvel.com

Fans at SDCC saw test footage from Ant-Man director Edgar Wright. No word on a release date or confirmation that this will be the Eric O’Grady version of Ant-Man. Fans hope original Ant-Man Hank Pym may appear in an Avengers sequel but Pym has plenty of other heroic aliases (Giant-Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket) to use.

Two Secret Marvel Films

The man behind Marvel Films is teasing two previously unannounced film projects. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige says the company is working on two secret projects in the works according to Digital Spy.

“We want to do two films a year,” he told Bloomberg. “Avengers is our only film this year

“In a week and a half, we begin filming Iron Man 3. By the end of the summer we’ll be working on the next Thor film, early next year the next Captain America film.

Avengers #167 courtesy Marvel.com

”Those are the three we’ve announced so far. We’ve got two beyond that that we haven’t announced yet, but we’re working on.”

What do you think/hope Marvel’s top secret films are?

Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man (with Edgar Wright directing the Eric O’Grady version of the hero) have been buzz.

Given the cosmic ending of The Avengers – I would say to watch for Guardians of the Galaxy, Adam Warlock and Silver Surfer.

For Guardians I’m hoping for the old-school version as featured in this classic Avengers issue by George Perez. Here’s the Marvel.com bio of the team in all their variations.

I still can’t get the idea of Johnny Depp as Doctor Strange or Idris Elba as Black Panther out of my geeky head!

A Fan’s Avengers Sequel Dreams

Avengers Origins: Ant-Man & The Wasp courtesy Marvel.com

Marvel’s The Avengers exceeded all expectations! The ending left us with the promise of cosmic level villain and storyline. More on that ending here - careful there be spoilers!

I would love to see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes take on Ultron because that would also mean the introduction of Henry Pym and Janet Van Dyne (aka Ant-Man & the Wasp!) (I can’t be root for Firefly reunion with Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau in those roles)

Ultron is a criminally insane sentient robot obsessed with the eradication of humanity. Dr. Henry Pym used his own brain patterns in experiments to create a sentient artificial intelligence. The robot gained Pym’s intelligence and his mental instability but without any human conscience.

Avengers #22 courtesy Marvel.com

Ultron created the Vision to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers but he betrayed his maker and became an Avenger (and husband of the Scarlet Witch.) Janet was Henry’s girlfriend and eventually became known as the Wasp. Ultron created a robot bride Jocasta modeled after Jan. Jocasta turned on her maker too.

Maybe that’s too many new Avengers and too many robots but what a villain! This cover is from the excellent Kurt Busiek and George Perez Avengers era.

That’s just a geek dream. After Joss Whedon’s direction and Marvel Films production of The Avengers I’d even be excited about Egghead as the villain in the sequel!

Stan Lee’s Picks for Avengers Sequel

Stan Lee reveals which heroes he wants to see in an Avengers sequel. The man who gave us the original X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and so many others named Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Ant-Man as his top 3 choices to appear in a sequel.

“Oh I’d be happy if they add the Black Panther and maybe Dr Strange,” he told I Am Rogue. “Those two and probably Ant-Man, which I think they are working on. Maybe I’ll play a little role in that.”

Lee added that he’s “amazed” the Avengers made it to the big screen before DC Comics managed to develop a Justice League movie.

“I never imagined I’d see any of my characters become movies. But this was a logical thing to do. It was smart. I’m amazed that DC didn’t beat us to it with the Justice League. But you’ve got to hand it to Marvel,” he said

Black Panther #35 courtesy Marvel

  Thanks to Digital Spy.

  This Geek’s Opinion:

I whole heartedly agree with the addition of Black Panther played by Idris Elba, PLEASE!. I have a sentimental soft spot for Henry Pym and Janet Van Dyne (Pym) aka Ant-Man and Wasp. I’d like to see a Firefly reunion with Nathan Fillion as Henry and Summer Glau as Janet.
