Professor X has been off the canvas in the X-Men books. Charles is back in next week’s Avengers vs. X-Men #6 but is he too late or this the countdown to a psi showdown between the teacher and his former students?
Before I go on…a warning in case you have not read Avengers vs. X-Men #5…

SERIOUSLY
HERE IT COMES
After the event of AvX #5 the Phoenix Force is living in Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus and Magik. The Phoenix Five are rebuilding Earth in their image. In a new preview for AvX #6 by Jonathan Hickman and Olivier Coipel on Comic Book Resources Professor Xavier arrives on a new Utopia. Charles is welcomed by Magneto but it’s the reunion with the Phoenix powered Cyclops that is filled with tension.
After the events of Deadly Genesis and Messiah Complex there was a rift between Professor X and Cyclops. The once devoted student assumed leadership of the mutant race and sent his mentor packing. Charles and Magneto both admired what Scott created Utopia. Erik follows him completely but I’ve suspected Charles could see the need to reclaim leadership of the X-Men. Given the circumstances handed him Scott has become a zealous general and not a teacher.
Is is time for Professor Xavier to lead again? I can’t help but think of Uncanny X-Men #136 when Charles and Jean Grey wages a psi war in The Dark Phoenix Saga. The Professor was able to defeat and cage the entity…for a while. AvX is showcased as Avengers versus X-Men but some of Marvel’s biggest players: Professor X, Scarlet Witch are just getting warmed up.

JG says:
One detail that is often omitted regarding the Xavier/Phoenix fight in Dark Phoenix Saga, is that Xavier only won because Jean Grey fought herself and helped him. And even then he only barely succeeded.
There’s a “What If” story showing what happened when that was not the case. Let’s just say it did not end up too well for him.
Will Power says:
Thanks John – excellent point. I think I may have the “What If” story. Curious – do you welcome Professor X back or think he should stay out of it? I personally loved how they passed the torch to Cyclops but gave him an impossible situation so he’s become a zealot in a way. I still wonder if he’s under the influence of the Void.
Thanks again for the comment.
